• Call scheduled for 2.5 hours with 30 minutes available immediately following the end of the session for queries or discussion.
• Presentation will be issued 4 working days in advance.
• You will need to read the course materials prior to the session, so at the beginning you can highlight any areas that you may be specifically unsure of, or if you any specific issues/scenarios that you may want to discuss. These will be factored into the session.
• After the session, time will be spent reflecting and consolidating training learnt into a development plan.
• Overall the training will be 6 hours, a CPD certificate will be issued.

Why do you need Caldicott Guardian training?

Undertaking Caldicott Guardian training helps you to:

• fulfil your responsibilities as a Caldicott Guardian
• understand your role and how it aligns with and supports other key roles such as the Senior Information Risk Owner and Data Protection officer
• enable responsible data sharing so that data can be shared with confidence for the public good, including responding to the risk arising from a failure to share
• ensure that people within organisation know how to work within key legislation such as the Data Protection Act 2018 but remain confident in sharing information when it is appropriate to do so
• develop a positive data sharing culture within a Common Law framework, where compliant data handling becomes second nature to everyone
• ensure that everyone is aware of their personal responsibility to exercise good judgement, and to safeguard and share information appropriately

Effective Caldicott Guardian training will:

• assist you in applying the Caldicott Principles, especially principle 7, the duty to share information and Principle 8 “Inform Patients and service users about how their confidential information is used”
• support you in acting as the “conscience” of the organisation
• enable you to understand your role in the Data Protection and Security Toolkit
• identify a baseline for effective data sharing
• through a wide range of case studies, help you to explore considerations when sharing data and maintaining confidentiality
• assist you in applying the Caldicott Principles, especially principle 7, the duty to share information

The law

The GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 requires you to provide a compliant environment to handling personal data.

Caldicott principle 6, also requires you to be compliant with the law.

However, as a Caldicott Guardian, compliance with additional legislation such as the Common Law duty of Confidentiality, safeguarding, human rights and lawful sharing with the police needs to be applied alongside data protection legislation.

Who needs Caldicott Guardian training?

This course is for all those who require refresher or up-to-date training, in the Caldicott Guardian role, either as a Caldicott Guardian, a deputy or an information governance professional working in support of the Caldicott Guardian. Specifically:

• A senior person in the organisation responsible for patient or service users’ confidential information.
• Other senior members of staff to champion confidentiality issues. If you employ managers or supervisors they need to know what you expect from them in terms of patient confidentiality and data sharing and how you expect them to deliver.
• Those in an Information Governance role wanting a better insight to confidentiality and how to support the Caldicott Guardian.
• Those deputising for the Caldicott Guardian.

Aims of the course

To equip those within an organisation responsible for confidentiality and patient/ service user information to understand and address their Caldicott Guardian role, accountabilities and responsibilities for:

• Assessing your own organisations compliance with the Caldicott principles
• Data sharing within and beyond direct care
• Adhering to Caldicott Principle 6: “Comply with the Law” and Principle 7: “the Duty to Share”
• Recognising what are “Caldicott Decisions” and enhancing confidence in making appropriate Caldicott decisions
• Understanding confidentiality and ethical considerations
• Data breaches – Learn from case studies of breaches by NHS and Social Care organisations and the decision making of informing patients/service users
• Data Protection Impact Assessments – from a confidentiality perspective
• Briefing the Senior Information Risk owner, Data Protection Officer and Board members or Trustees about confidentiality and patient privacy.
