How Can a FOI Request Be Made?

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request must be made in writing, which includes email, letter, or social media message. The request should clearly describe the information sought, but does not need to cite the legislation specifically.

To be valid, an FOI request must:

  • Include the requester’s real name and contact details.

  • Describe the information requested clearly.

  • Be directed to the relevant public authority.

Authorities are required to respond within 20 working days, either providing the information, explaining why it is exempt, or requesting clarification if the scope is unclear.
