Data Breaches

What Should I Do If I Suspect a Data Breach?

If you believe a data breach has occurred, immediate action is required to contain and report it.

  1. Secure the data: Prevent further exposure by securing documents, systems, or devices.

  2. Do not delete evidence: Preserve logs, emails, or files that may assist investigation.

  3. Report promptly: Notify your Data Protection Officer (DPO) or Information Governance (IG) team immediately.

  4. Document the incident: Record what happened, when it occurred, and what information was affected.

Do not attempt to fix or conceal the breach yourself. Prompt reporting allows your organisation to contain the impact, fulfil legal reporting duties, and maintain trust.
