A man has been sentenced to 15-months in prison following a local authority’s excellent use of their surveillance powers under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)).

Leeds City Council officers strategically deployed CCTV cameras at a fly tip hotspot following evidence linking one offender to multiple incidences of fly tipping. This is permitted under the investigatory powers available to local authorities.

As a result, the CCTV camera recorded waste being dumped from a vehicle on a further two occasions at the same location. Council staff then used other intelligence and evidence to identify the individual and seize his vehicle.

We provide expert, practical training in RIPA and associated legislation to support local authorities in gathering evidence against such individuals, who are illegally operating and creating many of the fly tips in your area.
